EXCERPT 8, from “Jesus Smith and the Ordinary Wonders”.

Gaia stood up and towered over her guest, already
tired of what looked like a well-thought-out practical
joke. She got hold of Cort’s arm and led him out.
“I am sorry,” she whispered while closing her door.
She was still pressing her back against it, eyes shut,
when somebody coughed discreetly from inside the
room. Cort was leaning against the fireplace’s mount, his
expression rather amused.
“We need to talk!” he said, thunder growling again in
the distance.
A bigger storm was closing in.
Gaia sat in front of him, uncertain but ready. “Why
didn’t you come in the same way last night?”
Cort gave her a severe look. “I am not here to show
off. Like I said, I am a close friend, something you’ll
greatly need…soon!”
“Why me?” she argued. “I need less help than so
many others out there.”
“That is quite right, dear, but nobody else is about to
give birth to the leader of the Gregorians.”
Questions exploded like fireworks in Gaia’s mind, yet
she paused to take in Cort’s words; for some reason, they
didn’t sound like a joke anymore…
